Microsoft Hosting Exchange Server 2007

by network on Dec.04, 2008, under Web Services

Exchange Server 2007 is used only with Windows 64-bit x86-64 variants. It may be v8 as well as v8.1 used with SP1. Anyway just 32 bits are demanded for the trial edition of this software. If there are any companies applying Exchange Server with 32-bit hardware, they’ll be informed of the necessity to change their hardware in a certain period. Still hardware is not the only point. According to the feature that Exchange Server 2007 doesn’t allow in-place upgrading some firms using software of 2000 and 2003 will have to move to the version of 2007.

In December 2005 there appeared the first beta edition of Exchange Server 2007, that was known as E12 or Exchange 12. Actually not many users could test it that time. Then in March 2006 more people could try another beta edition via TechNet Plus or MSDN subscriptions as reported by Windows Exchange team. Very soon, on April 25, everybody knew that the next version to be let out by Microsoft will be known as Exchange Server 2007.

Exchange Server 2007 belongs to the Innovative Communications Alliance products. The microsoft exchange server roles in Exchange Server 2007 will be like this:

1. Mailbox or MB
It holds public folder informorts e-mails. The role is also meant to provide Outlook clients MAPI admission. But there may be another case. For clustering mail data with high-availability MSCS Clustered Mailbox role is used. But it is impossible to apply any different roles on the exchange server with this modification of Mailbox.

2. Client Access or CA
Client Access doesn’t apply MAPI, it is supposed for a different mailbox server protocol admission. It as well allows apply any handy services of Exchange 2003 FrontEnd hosting like ActiveSync (mobile device), POP3/IMAP4 mail clients and an OWA (Internet browser).

3. Unified Message or UM
Applying Unified Message the users may read their messages, enter note books or something with only a phone. Still to let the UM work a user should install resources like IP-PBX and VoIP gateway.

4. HT (Hub Transport)
Hub Transport is supposed to choose the destination for each e-mail. They are resent to Edge, Mailbox or another Hub Transport servers. Well, while Exchange 2003 Bridgehead manages mailbox amounts with admin set groups, this 2007 version applies AD site data to manage it.

5. ET (Edge Transport)
Inbox starts with this role and outgoing does end. In order to turn to e-mail quarantine this role is actually often applied in some blackberry enterprise server. It appears as well reasonable that the role doesn’t demand Active Directory access. Working with limited access to some firm’s network is well enough for it to provide safety.

Aims for Roles. User Interface

Server settings for Graphic User Interface and Cmdlet are linked with the server role idea. In Exchange 2007 each role that promises its own functions is designed to perform them. Concerning Mailbox, its function is Get/Set-MailboxServer and the operator to check whether it is installed is IsMailboxServer. Client Access role will then possess the characteristics like Get/Set-ClientAccessServer and IsClientAccessServer. In case of HT the features will be IsHubTransportServer and Get/Set-TransportServer. And operators like IsUnifiedMessagingServer and Get/Set-UmServer are referred to Unified Message role.
